The Only Strategy You Need for Real Food Freedom

​What is Food Freedom?

I've seen this term floating around a lot lately, though it was first brought to my ears through the Whole30 creator, Melissa Hartwig, and refined in my head through her book Food Freedom Forever. I cannot say it enough, food freedom is so much more than finding what works for your body, it gives you this sense of confidence and self-awareness that boosts your life in ways that you never even knew were possible! I know it sounds too good to be true, but it's this transformation, an unfolding, and I think everyone should try it. Only if you are ready though, you can't rush the process. So this article is for those who feel called to make a change, do something radical, and start living life differently.

I want to share a clip from Melissa Hartwig's book that perfectly describes part of this:

"The words you use to describe your food and yourself have real power. Treating yourself like a child who needs to "be good" on their diet is misguided. What happens when a child misbehaves? They are punished. Food should never be associated with punishment. Imagining your diet as a jealous lover who will be critical and disapproving if you "cheat" is damaging. Feeling guilt and shame over your "infidelities" will never lead to true food freedom. Linking your food choices with your "success" or "failure" as a person is destructive. Who you are and your self worth has nothing to do with the potato chips or broccoli on your plate. 

Insulting yourself for your choices - any choices - is perhaps the most harmful behavior of all. You aren't a mess, a disaster, or a train wreck. You aren't hopeless, worthless, or pathetic. You are a committed, motivated, healthy person working hard to change your relationship with food, grappling with strong emotional ties and the pull of long-standing habits. You are so much more than the results of your struggles.

As you change your relationship with food through this [nutritional reset] program, I invite you to develop a new language around your food. You are not good or bad based on your choices. They are simply choices. 

You do not cheat, you make a choice.
You do not fail, you make a choice.
Your choices do not define you as a person.
There is no guilt, shame, or punishment, only consequences.


Imagine for a moment, that your food is just food, and that your choices are just choices. What you eat is not a statement about your self-worth, your value, or your significance in this world. Believe this and everything changes.​"

​Diets Don't Work

These words were seriously music to my ears! Because, I was listening on Audible, of course. This is the foundation I have come to realize and build my life upon. Every single thing that we do is a choice.

Can you see with this simple example how dieting can be so harmful? Diets don't set you up for life long success. They keep you coming back again and again. They launch your mind into a good/bad mindset around food, they make you feel guilty if you go off plan, some even encourage cheating, and I haven't come across one yet that doesn't leave you eager for it to be over so you can get back to eating (insert not-so-healthy cravings here). Why not make finding what works for you a lifelong journey where you are continuously taking notes - mental or otherwise - and learning and growing from each experience?

It's time to change our entire relationship with food. You might do it to feel better, maybe you're curious about what works for you, but in return you will gain SO MUCH MORE. It's As Easy as 1, 2, 3

​The Food Freedom plan is the most simple, three step process you will ever need to use around your food choices again. It's a lifelong practice and I want to invite you to join the community of hundreds of thousands of us as we take our health into our own hands and explore this road less traveled. 

I say hundreds of thousands because that's the popularity the Whole30 program itself has rallied. I believe that website has over one million views per month, yeah that's right! What an outrageous, incredible number of people to reach! Check out these jaw-dropping real-life testimonials from people who have tried it out.

Are you asking yourself, why am I so deeply promoting someone else's program? In my eyes it's the ripple effect, which really makes up life. Yeah, I'm goin' big on this answer. Melissa Hartwig started this drop in the water. Everything she has taken the time to say and research resonates with me on such a deep level and I can't even imagine developing something that can change your own life in such a way, encourage others to join you, and biggest of all go up against - in the most subtle way possible - our food giant companies. I believe this movement is single handedly creating a larger voice for the people and those chemical ridden, money grubbin, giant companies that don't really care about our health are forced to listen to what we, as the people want. How the heck could I not get on this ride, join this community, and preach from the mountain tops with everyone else? It's not about promoting someone else's program, it's about joining in on the movement and fitting in where I believe I belong.
