The “big idea” behind Batmanghelidj’s book Your Body’s Many Cries for Water is just that of what the slogan reads on the front cover: You’re not sick; you’re thirsty. Don’t treat thirst with medication. It really is a profound statement. One that certainly perks the ears, or I suppose, makes someone scoff. Batmanghelidj opens the book discussing the clear stance our government and healthcare has on health itself. The numbers paired with prescriptions that stack on top of one another, ultimately causing more side effects than your disease may have had in the first place, it is very clear that medications are not designed to cure degenerative diseases. Or in my opinion, may have been designed for that initially back in the day, but no longer serve that function. I learned a lot from this book. I feel as though I already knew a lot about hydrating and keeping the cells happy with water, but I failed to realize that our entire body is communicating to itself based on tiny energy currents (i.e. the chemical reactions). How do energy currents travel? Well, energy currents are also known as electrical currents and an electrical current is the flow of electrons through a substance that will permit that flow. What might that substance be in the body? You guessed it, water. So to break it back down in simple terms, our body needs water for our cells to be able to communicate with each other because they send messages through the water (essentially - it’s a little more complicated than that, but I’m trying to keep it simple for you). Batmanghelidj goes through countless chronic pain conditions we commonly see in Americans (low back, headaches, neck pain, etc.) as well as other disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, depression, and high blood pressure. Through each chapter he explains how the joints, muscles, and overall structure of these individual parts of our bodies depend on proper hydration for adequate function.I’ll admit, at first it seems far fetched, then I find myself feeling incredibly captivated by the basic explanations and can’t help but wonder, what would our world look like if everyone was properly hydrated? Just think about that for one moment. Yes, genetics, pollution, stress, and endless amounts of factors surely play into the overall health function of our body, but what if we did value the importance of hydration? What if, as a people, we actively recognized the importance of drinking water when we wake in the morning, before our coffee, if we had a glass before our wine, and we ended the evenings sipping on some more? Would we really see all these profound changes that Batmanghelidj claims? He certainly has built himself up a loyal following of people who claim they have first hand experienced his cure all declarations. Hydration is certainly a foundation when it comes to looking at a holistic health wheel. I believe that if you are going to start somewhere, let it be water. If you are looking to truly make a difference in your life combine proper hydration with stress reduction techniques and adopting a real foods diet. Overall a very interesting read that I would definitely recommend, even if just for curiosity’s sake.
